Cookie Policy

The short version

This website uses almost no cookies. There is no advertising, no analytics and nothing tracking you around the internet. Two services load fonts and icons from outside our server, and those services see your IP address. That is the whole picture, and the detail is below.

What cookies are

A cookie is a small file a website asks your browser to keep. It is normally used to remember something between one page and the next, such as the fact you are signed in. Cookies that are strictly necessary for a site to work do not need your permission. Anything else does, and that is why so many sites ask.

The cookies this site can set

Cookie What it is for How long it lasts
cpa_preview_access Only while the site is behind a holding page. It remembers that you used a preview link, so you are not asked again. 24 hours
notice_bar_closed If we show an announcement bar and you close it, this remembers not to show it again. 7 days
wordpress_logged_in_*wp-settings-* Set by WordPress for our own staff when they sign in to manage the site. Visitors never get these. Session, or up to a year for settings

All three are strictly necessary or set only in response to something you did, so none of them needs your consent. At the time of writing, a normal visit to this site sets no cookies at all.

Other things stored in your browser

WordPress writes one item called wpEmojiSettingsSupports into your browser’s session storage. It records whether your browser can display emoji so the page does not have to work it out twice. It is deleted when you close the tab and it does not identify you.

Services that load from outside our server

Two services are loaded from other companies’ servers so the site looks right. Neither sets a cookie, but because your browser has to fetch a file from them, they receive your IP address and basic information about your browser:

  • Google Fonts, which provides the typefaces used across the site.
  • Font Awesome, which provides the icons.

If you would rather not have that happen, a browser extension that blocks third party requests will stop it, though the site will then use fallback fonts and the icons will not appear.

What we do not do

We do not use advertising cookies. We do not use analytics such as Google Analytics. We do not use social media tracking pixels. We do not sell or share information about your browsing.

How to control cookies

Every browser lets you see the cookies a site has set, delete them, and block them in future. Look under Settings, then Privacy. Blocking strictly necessary cookies may stop parts of the site working properly. The ICO’s website has plain guidance on cookies if you want to read more.

If this changes

If we ever add analytics, advertising, or anything else that needs your permission, we will put a proper consent banner on the site and ask you before it runs. We will update this page at the same time.
